Prevalence of spotted fever group rickettsiae in Poland

ABSTRACT
Introduction:
Rickettsia is a genus of obligatory intracellular and Gram-negative bacteria responsible for causing acute febrile diseases called rickettsioses. Species within the genus are divided into the spotted fever group, the typhus group, the transient group and the ancestral group. Most species are transmitted by various arthropod vectors.
Objective:
The aim of the study is to summarize current knowledge about the occurrence of the genus Rickettsia in Poland. The article focuses on comparing the results showing the occurrence of different Rickettsia species in ticks collected in Poland, and the results of sero-epidemiological studies.
Discussion:
In Poland, several cases of rickettsioses are reported annually, mainly from the group of spotted fevers. TIBOLA (Tick-borne lymphadenopathy) and African tick fever diseases have been reported in Poland. The seroprevalence of Rickettsia spp. among the Polish population amounts to 51% of individuals, in particular among the groups occupationally exposed to tick-borne pathogens. The infection rates with Rickettsia spp. range from zero to more than 60% of ticks collected in Poland.
Conclusions:
Rickettsiae are significant in the area of public health. Pathogens are also classified as agents of occupational biohazards. Further studies on identifying new potential vectors of these pathogens and their pathogenicity are of particular importance for rapid diagnosis and effective prevention of rickettsiosis.
